Experience the wonder of owls, hawks and falcons in flight when Friends of the IBA’s 5th annual Winter Raptor Fest returns on March 28th & 29th! See and learn about many of our native owls, hawks and falcons, including Snowy Owl, Great Horned Owl, Bald Eagle and dozens more! NEW for 2015: Meet Kiska, a young wolf educating people about wolves and their role in a healthy ecosystem!
Owl Watches and guided bird walks offer your chance to encounter endangered Short-eared Owls, Northern Harriers, Snowy Owls, Rough-legged Hawks and other wintering raptors in the wild! Horse-drawn sleigh or wagon rides, kids’ activities, "For the Birds" store and more round out this fun and exciting weekend where raptors rule
Friends of the IBA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to educate people about and conserve endangered and threatened birds of the Washington County Grasslands Important Bird Area and their habitat. We provide educational and recreational opportunities for local residents and visitors to see and learn about the birds and are working to open our new Outreach Center this summer. Friends of the IBA is committed to ensuring our work to conserve the birds benefits local communities.

Segment Two
Start Training NOW! Freihofer’s Run for Women Challenge

The Freihofer’s Run for Women 5K will launch its 5th annual Freihofer’s Training Challenge on Monday, March 16.
The goal of the 10-week program is help participants at all running levels (novice, intermediate and advanced) get ready for the 37th Freihofer’s Run for Women on Saturday, May 30 in downtown Albany.
The 10-week Training Challenge program, which attracted 400 women last year ranging in age from 14-72, follows an enhanced version of the Couch to 5K Running Plan and also includes intermediate and advanced running levels, as well as a sport walking option for those seeking a different approach to reaching the finish line.
Participants can choose from four in-person sessions Mondays 1:30 p.m., 5 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. (at The Crossings of Colonie) and, new this year, Wednesdays 6 p.m. (at the Halfmoon baseball park on Route 236). Participants will gather at the facility’s south picnic pavilion. This new venue should make it easier for women living in S. Saratoga to come home from work and begin to get in shape for the 5/30 Freihofer’s Run for Women.

Segment Three
A Monopoly Tournament for a Good Cause!
Guests: Donna Reichel (Director of Development) and Kerrie Wolf-Piechota (Director)
Remember those nights when we would gather the entire family around the table to play Monopoly? Recall the fun of buying up those hotels and watching your sister or brother land on them? Well now you have the opportunity to bring all of those memories back and perhaps win $500 cash as well!!!
Join us for our second annual Monopoly Tournament. Registration begins at 4:30pm at The Holiday Inn at 232 Broadway in Saratoga Springs, NY. The first 90-minute round starts promptly at 5:30pm. The top six players from the preliminary round will play a final 90-minute round after dinner. The top scoring player will win $500 cash that evening donated by REM Printing.
There will also be a silent auction with signed, rare sports items. All proceeds will benefit the Visiting Nurse Service Foundation CARE CHOICES Program. CARE CHOICES is a home based palliative care program for our community. Their mission is to support the Visiting Nurse Service of NENY in offering the highest level of home care for our community.

It’s Pi DAY! 3.14159265359 and more!

miSci’s mission: to inspire people to celebrate and explore science and technology, past, present and future. miSci is a must-see attraction in the Capital Region, with something for everyone. Check out the three fabulous coming events listed below.

1. Pi Day is scheduled for March 14 from 9 am to 3:30 pm. The special activities are free with admission. Have fun with the mathematical term pi (3.1415926…) on the 14th day of the 3rd month in 2015 (3.14.15) with a special kick-off event at 9:26am, hands-on math, and pie!
2. Monarchs and Moonshine is an afterhours event on Thursday, April 2 from 6-8 pm. Enjoy signature drinks and eats along with miSci’s indoor butterfly house, Summit NY’s Kymar Farm Distillery, music, demos, planetarium shows & more. 3. Science workshops for kids occurs during the April Break from April 6-10. Sessions are from 9 am to noon and 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm. You can choose either session or both sessions. $20 per workshop (10% discount for members & second child); Scholarships Available. Each workshop focuses on a different topic, including reptiles, 3D printing, DNA, architecture, dinosaurs and more. Tumultuous Earth lets kids explore tornadoes, volcanoes and earthquakes. In Butterflies, kids will investigate camouflage, eye spots and more while visiting a living lab in miSci’s indoor butterfly house, and in Bubbleology, kids will discover light, rainbows and color.

The Art of Kevin McKrell
Guest: Ryan Mahoney (Executive Director)
Celtic folk singer songwriter Kevin McKrell was a founding member of Celtic Folk Band Donnybrook Fair and the Celtic Bluegrass Band ‘The McKrells’. He has performed in theaters, clubs and on festival stages across the United States, Canada, Ireland and Scotland His songs have been recorded or performed by artists from around the world. Kevin and his bands have performed for audiences at the top Celtic, Folk and Bluegrass festivals, Carnegie Hall , Lincoln Center, Troy Music Hall, Saratoga Performing Arts Center are a few of the top venues where Kevin and his bands have appeared. Kevin is also an award winning painter and sculpture as well as partner and creative director of Celtic Attitudes Clothing Company.
The Irish American Heritage Museum is pleased to re-introduce the tradition of the Seanachie, the traditional Irish Storyteller to downtown Albany. The Seanachie were travelers, carrying stories and news between hamlets and families. For the price of a warm meal, they’d share stories of the old ones and lively tales of romance and blarney. There would be music, smiles, a bit of learning, and a bit of carrying on. In that spirit join us for, stories, fine fellowship, and fun.
Marni Gillard, is a well-known regional storyteller and author of Storyteller and Storyteacher (Ann Izard Storytellers’ Choice Award winner). Marni has a long interest in Celtic culture and stories, and in 2010 & 2011 she brought to the area an acclaimed one-man performance of Granuaille (Grace O’Malley). Mary Murphy is a regional writer and storyteller who has performed regionally at Proctors, and Story Sundays and nationally at the Hawaii Storytelling Festival, the Clever Gretchen Storytelling Festival at Syracuse University & National Storytelling Festival. Widely known for her humorous and family tales, her stories have been published in the anthologies: Give a Listen and A Solstice Evergreen.

Segment Six
Underground Railroad Consortium of NYS
Guest: Mary Liz Stewart (co-founder)
Twenty representatives of vetted Underground Railroad programs and sites in New York State met Nov. 13 to organize a statewide consortium. Organizers traveled from as far north as Ausable Chasm, as far west as Jamestown, and all the way from the eastern tip of Long Island to meet in Peterboro at the Smithfield Community Center, the site of the inaugural meeting of the New York State Antislavery Society in 1835.
Mary Liz Stewart and her husband Paul Stewart are the co-founders of the Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region, Inc. and co-chairs of the Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence, a documented Underground Railroad site in Albany. Judith Wellman PhD, professor emeritus SUNY Oswego, is the historian and principal investigator of Historical New York Research Associates, the author of the criteria used to determine the authenticity of an Underground Railroad site, and the coordinator of the 1816 Farmington Quaker Meetinghouse Museum. Dot Willsey is a Co-Chair of the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark and the President of the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum in Peterboro.
